about

It is with great reverence and respect that we present watusi---a homeboy-homage and elegy to our dearly departed brother, Eric “DJ Wundrkut” Cardeno, by ICS family member, juanstockton.

Over the course of a weighty collection of 40 micro-chopped and reconstructed mementos, watusi is an intimate examination into yesterday as seen through the lens of a friendship & brotherhood with one of his closest & trusted creative partners. A nascent kinship forged innocuously over b-boy practices and procedures turned into an imperishable bond built on mutual intrigue and discovery. It is a testament of a two-man support system navigating through life and pushing one another to expanded vistas.

Derived from Eric’s adolescent graffiti handle, watusi is an assemblage of VHS worn epigrams imbued with an unmistakable sense of coming of age frivolity, samplehound curiosity, and cleared history mischief. juanstockton cuts up and reconstitutes songs of significance directly affixed to cojoined experiences between the demure duo. From blunt ashes spilled on Civic floor mats and exchanges of minute long email attachments, to the fruitless search parties and blinkless nights of anguish and disbelief, watusi encompasses a vast emotional scope that is both jovial and pensive as well as celebratory and mournful. Along with a unique piece puzzling of passages into renewed pulses (half-timed or otherwise), a steady salvo of voices is employed to embolden the themes of a needle dropped narrative. Just like the watusi, rhythms burst and flash momentarily only to reignite a split second later and set off the next barrage of sounds.

Once assembled, the seemingly disparate pieces form a winding garland to adorn a care package to the hereafter. Emphasizing the ability for cultural rituals to widen one’s views in spite of blinding grief and debilitating loss, meaning and significance can be found and provide accessibility and clarity to ideas that were once vague and opaque. Suffice to say, as much as watusi is a tribute to the spectre of what once was, it also serves as an essential vehicle for healing and acceptance for the auteur himself.

Offering another dimension beyond the irrefutable erudition and scratch virtuosity of DJ Wundkrut, watusi paints an airbrushed portrait of a tender and benevolent spirit in constant search of inspiration, new modes of expression, & ultimately, a sense of purpose and identity. Furthermore, watusi acts as a cue-point reminding us that though the needle may skip and the track ends abruptly, we who remain on this plane must carry on and persist with memories of this beautiful song.

In remembrance,

“This one’s for you, pare!”
